The Department of Nigerian Legislature was created in 2019 following the elevation of the former National Secretariat of Nigerian Legislature (NSNL) to a Directorate.  Together with the Department of International Parliamentary Organization and the Department of Protocol, they constitute the Directorate of Inter-Parliamentary Relations and Protocol.

Conference of Presiding Officers of Nigerian Legislature and Forum of Clerks of Nigerian Legislature (COPON/FOCON)

This desk coordinates and archives the activities of the conference and the Forum. It is also responsible for the organization of the meetings of the bodies.

PARLIAMENT

Parliamentary Exchange

This desk coordinates parliamentary exchange programmes and parliamentary study visits and tours to the National Assembly.

LOCAL CONFERENCE

Local Conferences

This desk is saddled with the task of designing conferences for Staff and members of the State Houses of Assembly as a platform to engage, learn and develop. These conferences may be solely organized by the National Assembly or done in collaboration with third-party bodies.

PARLIAMENT

Workshop and Seminars

This desk is saddled with the task of designing workshops and seminars for Staff and members of the State Houses of Assembly to achieve more targeted focus on mutual areas of interest arising from the conferences of the preceding desk. These seminars may be organized solely by the National Assembly or in collaboration with third-party bodies.

Core Functions and Activities

  • The department serves as the link between the National Assembly and the State Houses of Assembly.
  • It is also responsible for coordinating study visits to the National Assembly as well as inter-Parliamentary exchange and attachment programmes.
  • Coordinates the convocation of the Conference of Presiding Officers of
    Nigerian Legislature.
  • Organises meeting of Forum of Clerk of Nigerian Legislatures.
  • Facilitates Parliamentary Exchange Programme and Study Visit to the National Assembly.
  • Source for Parliamentary Attachment to foreign parliaments for members and staff of the National Assembly.
  • Liaises with Civil Society Organisations on matters of specialized capacity building for staff of the National Assembly
