The Department is Africa centric as it handles matters relating to parliaments and parliamentary organisations within the Africa continent to advance Africa’s interests, promote regional integration, and address continental challenges. Such organisations include: Pan African Parliament (PAP), Africa Parliamentary Union (APU, Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA Africa Region) and ECOWAS Parliament.
The African Parliamentary Union (APU) is a continental inter-parliamentary organization aimed at promoting dialogue, cooperation, and unity among African national parliaments. As a founding and active member, Nigeria is committed to the goals of the APU.

The Pan-African Parliament (PAP) Desk in the National Assembly of Nigeria is the coordinating unit responsible for managing Nigeria’s engagement with the PAP, the legislative body of the African Union (AU). The Desk ensures Nigeria’s effective representation, facilitates information exchange.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) remains a vital regional bloc promoting economic integration and political cooperation across West Africa. To facilitate this role, the ECOWAS Desk in the National Assembly (NASS), operating under the Directorate of Inter-Parliamentary Relations and Protocol, coordinates and supports the legislative engagement of Nigeria within the ECOWAS framework.
