Parliamentary diplomacy has become an increasingly important dimension of modern legislative practice.
Through participation in international parliamentary organizations, bilateral engagements, parliamentary friendship groups, conferences, study visits, and interactions with foreign delegations, the National Assembly continues to strengthen Nigeria’s voice and presence within the global parliamentary community.
Throughout my career in the Parliamentary Service, I have remained convinced that exposure to international best practices, continuous learning, and engagement with parliamentary counterparts across the world are essential to building strong and effective legislative institutions. Whether through interactions with colleagues at the Forum of Clerks of Nigerian Legislatures, engagements with parliamentary professionals and development partners, or participation in meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliament (ASGP) during Inter-Parliamentary Union Assemblies,I have witnessed firsthand the value of parliamentary cooperation in advancing institutional excellence.
I have also engaged with the Society of Clerks-at-the-Table (SoCATT) to advance parliamentary administration procedural excellence. Through the platform, I participate in regular seminars and international conferences to share professional expertise and update institutional knowledge on legislative practices. The collaborative relationship strengthens regional and international partnerships, particularly within the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) network by fostering peer-to-peer learning.
In addition, under the platform of Pan-African Parliaments ((PAP), we have expanded our engagement into a continental mandate working through the Association of Secretaries-General of African Parliaments (ASGAP). Under this regional platform, the Clerks perform a strategic role in promoting continental integration.
Furthermore, as Clerk to the National Assembly, I serve as an Advisory to the National Assembly Delegation to the United Nations Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Hearings and Meetings and participate at bilateral meetings between the Nigerian Parliament and other Parliaments.
It is in this spirit that this website has been established. It serves as a repository of the National Assembly’s inter-parliamentary activities and a platform through which Members, staff, researchers, development partners, diplomats, and the general public can access information on the National Assembly’s international engagements and partnerships. By making these activities more visible and accessible, the platform contributes to transparency, institutional memory, and public understanding of parliamentary diplomacy.
I wish to express the profound appreciation of the National Assembly to the Government of Switzerland, through the Swiss Parliamentary Technical Cooperation Programme, for supporting the development of this website. I also acknowledge the invaluable contribution of the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC), whose partnership and continued support for parliamentary strengthening initiatives has been instrumental to the realization of this project.
